Mewing Guide: Tongue Posture for Jawline
Mewing is the practice of proper tongue posture that may improve jawline definition over time. Learn the technique, realistic expectations, and what the science says.
What is Mewing?
Mewing is named after Dr. John Mew, an orthodontist who proposed that proper tongue posture—resting the entire tongue against the roof of the mouth—can influence facial development and jawline appearance.
How to Mew Correctly
Place the entire tongue (including the back) against the roof of your mouth. Teeth should be lightly touching or slightly apart. Lips closed. Breathe through your nose. Maintain this posture 24/7.
Common Mistakes
Only pressing the tip of the tongue, pressing too hard, mouth breathing, and inconsistency. The back third of the tongue is most important and hardest to engage.
Realistic Expectations
Results, if any, take months to years and are more dramatic in younger people whose bones are still developing. Adults may see subtle improvements but major bone changes are unlikely.
What the Science Says
There's limited scientific research on mewing specifically. The underlying principles of proper tongue posture and its effects on development have some orthodontic support, but dramatic adult transformations lack evidence.
